The controversy involving Julia Xu emerged in the days after Kirk's assissination when a viral video showed the woman in what appeared to be a college classroom discussion on the "Chinese Revolution."
When asked about Kirk's assaisination, she said,
"I've been saying we need to bring back political assissinations. I don’t feel bad, and I don’t think that everyone deserves the right to free speech."
"I think some people should be afraid to express their opinion in public."
She referenced Mao Zedong's essay "On the People's Democratic Dictatorship," arguing that free speech should be limited for "reactionaries, imperialists, and capitalists," and claimed her professor agreed with her views after class.
When Xu was put on blast, she responded by deleting the video, privatizing her social media accounts and going offline.
